ATP Argentina Open 2021 – Round 1 and outright predictions
Albert Ramos-Vinolas v Holger Rune – Tuesday, March 2 12:00 ART
The 47th-ranked Albert Ramos-Vinolas will face off against a 17-year-old wild card Holger Rune in the first round of the 2021 ATP Buenos Aires. At the time of writing, Ramos-Vinolas has already made it to the finals of ATP Cordoba, where he’ll face off against Juan Manuel Cerundolo for his third ATP title.
Regardless of how that match will end, Ramos-Vinolas deserves a lot of praise for his performance at the tournament, where he has shown great form. All of his wins were three-setters, however, which is not particularly impressive even though he has beaten the tournament favorite Diego Sebastian Schwartzman 6-1, 4-6 and 6-3 in the quarter-finals.
For Rune, this will mark his ATP debut, but that does not necessarily mean he is set for failure. The Danish youngster enters Argentina on the back of some very impressive showings at the Futures circuit level, having reached seven tournament finals in a span of six months and has won four of them.
Not only has his impressive form helped Rune go from being ranked outside of 1000 at the start of the season to 405th now, but he has also proven clay suits him. Rune is 13-2 on clay this season and held a fairly impressive 34-12 record on it last year.
Given his lack of experience, it’s hard to trust Rune to win. That said, we have to consider Ramos-Vinolas is not nearly as efficient on clay and is set to face an unknown opponent, which won’t help hi cause. There is a world where Ramos-Vinolas sweeps the youngster, but we like the odds offered on the Dane to win one set.
Prediction: Holger Rune to win a set
ATP Buenos Aires Outright Prediction
The tournament top seed Diego Schwartzman is billed as the main favorite to go all the way and win the ATP Buenos Aires and there are not many arguments to be made against that. The main three names that could stand in his way are Miomir Kecmanovic, Benoit Paire and Christian Garin, yet none of them seem to be at the level of Schwartzman.
Schwartzman is currently ranked no.9 in the world, and is head and shoulders above his competition. What’s more, Schwartzman is also extremely effective on clay, which was evident last year, when he reached the grand finals of the Italian Open.
Schwartzman made it to the 1/16 finals of the Australia Open, where he lost to the eventual semi-finalists Aslan Karatsev in three straight sets. This week, he also suffered an unfortunate 1-2 upset loss against Albert Ramos-Vinolas in the quarter-finals of the ATP Cordoba, although we wouldn’t overreact to that result as it was nothing more than an upset win for the Spaniard.
Prediction: Diego Schwartzman to win ATP Buenos Aires
