2019 US Open Women’s Round 1 Odds, Preview & Expert Picks

Serena Williams vs. Maria Sharapova

When it comes to women’s tennis, it all starts with Serena Williams. Serena has won the U.S. Open six times in her career. She’ll be looking for her 24th career Grand Slam title. She has been hampered by injuries, and hasn’t been able to devote as much time as she would like to her tennis game.  Sharapova has one U.S. Open title to her credit.

Sharapova and Williams have met 21 times over their career, with Williams holding a 19-2 advantage. While Williams is still at the top of her game, Sharapova’s skills have diminished as of late.

We will be interested to see if Sharapova still has some of her magic left, or if she has passed her prime. Either way, This should still be a very good opening round match.

Coco Gauff vs. Anastasia Potapova

How can we forget America’s 15-year-old darling Coco Gauff? Gauff took the tennis world by storm with her tremendous run at Wimbledon. She defeated Venus Williams before losing to this year’s Wimbledon champion, Simona Halep. All eyes will be on Gauff, and if she can make a run, she will be looked upon as the heir apparent to Serena Williams.

While Gauff has gotten all of the attention, Potapova has quietly snuck up on the tennis world. She has advanced to the second round of all three of the 2019 Grand Slams.

These two teen sensations have owned the junior circuit, as both have held the #1 spot in the rankings. We’ll see what they can do in their opening round match, especially with a crowd that will be very pro-Gauff. If Gauff can defeat Potapova, she could potentially face the #1 player in the world, Naomi Osaka in the 3rd round.

Gauff will be a fan favorite over the next few days, and the crowd could give her the momentum that she needs to advance to the later rounds of the tournament.

Sofia Kenin vs. Coco Vandeweghe

This match will feature two Americans that are trending in different directions. Kenin, ranked 20th in the world, has worked her way up the rankings by advancing to the later rounds of many of her recent tournament.

Vandeweghe on the other hand has fallen in the rankings. Due to an injury, she has yet to play her best tennis. This should be a fun matchup between the two natives of the United States.
