USA vs. Costa Rica 2016 Copa America Centenario Betting Preview

Posted by Aaron . on June 7, 2016 in

In what venerated U.S. striker Clint Dempsey calls a “must-win” encounter, Copa America hosts USA will be going against Costa Rica on June 7th for an enticing Group A clash. The Americans suffered a 2-0 loss to Colombia in their opening match of the tournament on Friday, while Costa Rica held Paraguay to a scoreless draw on Saturday. As things currently stand, the Ticos are tied with Paraguay at second in the group with 1 point apiece, with Colombia at the top with 3 points and USA placed at the cellar with zero points. Another loss for USA would all but dash the hopes of a progression to the second round by the Americans, no wonder Dempsey and his compatriots consider the game against Costa Rica at Soldier Field as a must-win.

Will the Americans be able to rally behind their home crowd for a much-needed win against the Ticos, or will the silently-dangerous Costa Ricans deliver an upset in the 2016 Copa America odds? Read on as we preview this pivotal Game A clash below.

Why Bet on USA

The situation looks bleak for USMNT, but things aren’t that bad. The Americans just need one win and a draw or two wins in the remaining two group games against Costa Rica on Tuesday (June 7th) and Paraguay on Saturday (June 11th). That, however, is easier said than done, as Costa Rica and Paraguay are far from easy opponents. The Costa Ricans have particularly been a pesky thorn in the flesh for USA, winning each of the past two meetings against the Americans. Even so, USA is a talented squad with quality players on both sides of the ball and Coach Jurgen Klinsmann is a tactician that knows how to get his team out of adversity. If the Americans can control the ball possession like they did against Columbia and then use their final-third opportunities in a better way, they should be able to bounce back with the win.

Why Bet on Costa Rica

Besides their aforementioned recent good form against USA, the Costa Ricans are a very disciplined side that attacks and defends as a unit, a big reason they were able to frustrate the solid Paraguayans even without No. 1 Ticos goalkeeper Keylor Navas. That said, the Costa Ricans will need to get more creative in the final third of the ball, especially with the likes of Arsenal’s Joel Campbell and Bryan Ruiz playing better offensively. The fact that USA was sloppy with the ball defensively with a number of mistakes should particularly be a big motivation for the abled Costa Ricans to punish the hosts through counter attacks and set-pieces for a win that could easily guarantee the Ticos a spot in the next round.
