MLS is Back Tournament – July 14th Matches
The MLS is Back Tournament is now a week into play, with every team no having played at least one game. Like all of sports, the setup is rather odd in that there are no fans in attendance and players are basically sequestered in the ESPN compound in Orlando, Florida. Still it is great to have the MLS back, and while we have had a couple of games that have featured teams looking a little rusty, the quality of football has been good, especially when you consider the circumstances. July 14 sees the start of the second round of group games, which could prove to be make or break for several teams. There are 3 games set to go on Tuesday, and we will be covering 2 of them. The game between Seattle and Chicago is already underway at time of writing, so let’s dig into the later games, along with their MLS odds.
MLS July 14th Games
NYCFC (+119) Vs Orlando (+206)
This is a huge game for both teams, albeit for very different reasons. New York FC are in desperate need of a win if they are to have any shot at getting out of the group stage. They did not look particularly good in their opening game of the tournament, which ended in a 1-0 loss to the Philadelphia Union. It’s a little too early to be making any sort of wild predictions, but NYCFC looked very anemic on the offensive side of the field. Who is going to fill the gap left by the departure of David Villa?
One of the more entertaining games of the opening round of games was the Florida rivalry game between Orlando and Inter Miami. The new boys to the MLS held their own for most of the game, but they were undone by a late Nani goal that gave Orlando the 2-1 win. Orlando could clinch a spot in the next round with a win here, but a single point might also be enough to put them in a very good position.
NYCFC are in as a ½ goal favorite here, with the goal total set at 2 ¾. They really need to go for it tonight, which could create an open game. I am going with the draw in this one.
- Pick: NYCFC 1 Orlando 1
Philadelphia (+136) Vs Inter Miami (+174)
The general rule of thumb is that you usually expect an expansion team to struggle in their first season. there are exceptions to the rule, with Atlanta being one of those, but for the most part, the struggle is usually real. We haven’t seen much of Inter Miami to this point, but they have not looked at all bad. They have some obvious holes that need to be filled and they need something out of this Group A game if they are to stay alive after losing 2-1 to Orlando in the opener.
Group A could essentially be decided on Tuesday night if Orlando and Philadelphia pick up wins. The Union will be looking to build on their great start to the tournament, which they kicked off with a 1-0 win over NYCFC. You would certainly like them to come up with a win over the expansion team.
The bookies have this one in as a PK play, with the goal total set at 2 ¾. I like the UNDER in this one, and I also like Philly to win.
- Pick: Philadelphia 1 Inter Miami 0
