France vs Portugal Euro 2016 Finals Odds Preview
Both Portugal and France have made their way into the EURO 2016 finals on the back of identical 2-0 wins over their semifinal opponents. The Portuguese advanced over Wales, thanks to an acrobatic header from Cristiano Ronaldo followed by a nifty follow by Nani just minutes later. The French eliminated the Germans with a penalty kick and then an opportunistic collection of a rebound, both goals by Antoine Griezmann. Now France look to hoist a third major international trophy on their home soil, after winning EURO 1984 and the 1998 World Cup in this same stadium. Why should you bet on France?
No offense to the achievements of Portugal, but France coming through Germany is much more impressive than Portugal coming through Wales. There is also the electric play of Antoine Griezmann to consider, who with six goals has tallied as much as Nani and Ronaldo combined. If the French can keep finding space, they will deliver punishment to the Portuguese back line unlike anything the side has seen thus far in the tournament. While the Portuguese midfield is strong, notably with Renato Sanches, the French have a stronger midfield than what Portugal have been seeing, thanks to Blaise Matuldi and Paul Pogba patrolling the space between the boxes. Pogba is outstanding at swiping the ball and sending things the other way.
Why should you put your money on Portugal?
Portugal play a plodding style — at least they did through the quarterfinal. They did not win any games in regulation time until the victory over Wales, but they did turn on the offensive fireworks a bit against the Cinderella story from the UK. However, they have put away opponent after opponent, grinding down the other sides with stout defense and a refusal to make many mistakes. They play practical soccer, and Ronaldo and Nani have been rewarded with three goals apiece in the tournament.
My Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction
Kudos to Portugal for making it this far. However, I’m predicting that France will have the better attacking and defense in this game. France 3, Portugal 1.
