2021 USL Championship Betting Update
The Tampa Bay Rowdies, who won the Eastern Conference crown last year, are off to another fast start, amassing 18 points in eight matches thanks to six wins and two losses. Uruguayan-born Sebastián Guenzatti is tied for the league lead with six goals to lead the way for the Rowdies, who are being given an 11% chance to win the USL title, according to fivethirtyeight.com.
But don’t count out the Pittsburgh Riverhounds, who always seem to make noise and are second in the Atlantic Division at the moment. Meanwhile, Hartford Athletic could be Tampa’s biggest competition in the division. They have 13 points and a +9 goal differential in just six games, which is better than Tampa’s goal differential in eight games. At this point, Hartford could be considered the biggest surprise of the season.
The race in the Central Division remains tight with Louisville City and Birmingham Legion tied at the top with 16 points. Meanwhile, FC Tulsa and Atlanta United 2 aren’t far behind with 12 points each. Jamaican-born forward Neco Brett is pacing Birmingham with six goals, putting him in a tie for the league lead. However, behind former Tottenham Academy product Cameron Lancaster and his seven goals, Louisville City remains the favorite with a 13% chance of winning the USL title, which are the second-best odds in the league.
On paper, the Mountain Division is the weakest in the UCL Championship. El Paco Locomotive FC has the best championship odds in the division, although they have just the seventh-best odds in the league. Of course, San Antonio FC and New Mexico United are close behind them in terms of odds to win the league title. Of course, it’s Rio Grande Valley FC who has surprised everyone by climbing to the top of the Mountain Division behind playmaker James Murphy. On the other hand, El Paso Locomotive is just two points back with two games in hand.
After winning the Western Conference title last year, Phoenix Rising is once again leading the way. They are the overall favorites to win the USL with a 22% chance to take home the title. The tandem of Spaniard Santi Moar and Ghana international Solomon Asante has totaled 11 goals for Phoenix this season. But fans shouldn’t forget about Orange County FC, which is three points behind Phoenix in the Pacific Division with a game in hand. Orange County is being given a 6% chance to win the USL title with Haitian international Ronaldo Damus among the league leaders in goals with five.
