2019 Copa America Semifinals Odds, Preview & Pick

Brazil vs. Argentina

It doesn’t get any bigger than Brazil vs. Argentina. The two South American powerhouses will meet for a spot in the Copa America title game.

Brazil advanced to the semifinals with a win over Paraguay. After ending regulation in a 0-0 tie, Brazil won 4-3 on penalty kicks. Argentina advanced by beating Venezuela 2-0.

These two countries have a long history. In their over 100 year history, they have over 12 World Cup finals between them. They have met 105 times over the years, with Brazil winning 41, Argentina winning 38, and 26 draws. They last met in the Copa America in 2007. Brazil took the win 3-0.

In their last five meetings, Argentina has just one victory. Brazil has three wins, with one draw. In their last meeting in 2018, Brazil won 1-0.

In their last 14 International matches, Brazil is unbeaten. They’ve won 11, with 3 ending in a draw. Their last loss was in July of 2018.

So far

All of the pressure in this match is on the Brazilian team. With the tournament being played in Brazil, the home crowd will be hyped. If Brazil fails to play well, the home crowd will let them know that they don’t approve of their play. Brazil has won the Copa America all four times that they have hosted, so this is a good sign for them.

Brazil’s defense has been stellar in this tournament. Brazil hasn’t given up a goal in its last six matches and has only given up two goals in their last 14 matches.

Brazil hasn’t gotten this far in the Copa America since 2007. That year, the Brazilians defeated Argentina to win the Copa America. The last four times they have gotten to the semifinals, the Brazilians have won the tournament.

As for Argentina, they haven’t won the Copa America since 1993. Although Argentina has reached the finals in four of the last five Copa America tournaments, they haven’t been able to win the final.

In order for Argentina, to get past Brazil, Lionel Messi is going to need to play a big role. Messi has yet to win an international title for Argentina. He has played in four international finals, but Messi and Argentina can’t seem to win the big one.

Will this finally be the year of Messi, or will the hosts move on to the finals?

Chile vs. Peru

Chile is the two time defending champion of the Copa America. The aging Chilean team will have to contend with Peru. Peru has not had a good tournament and comes into the semi-final on the downward trend. Peru was beaten 5-0 by Brazil, and it’s only victory was a come from behind victory against a weak Bolivian team. Look for Chile to take this one and advance to the finals.
