The Toronto Maple Leafs saw with a 36-25-9 record as they were heading into the final dozen games of the season. That was 81 points, which was third in the Atlantic Division, and tied with Carolina and Columbus for 6th in the Eastern Conference. The bad news – Toronto was just a point ahead of the Islanders, who were 9th and fighting for a spot in the postseason.  The Maple Leafs were looking to reach the postseason for the fourth straight season. Offensively, Toronto does not Struggle

The Toronto Maple Leafs are one of the best offensive teams in all of the National Hockey League. There is no doubt that Toronto can score goals, and score them often. The Maple Leafs scored 3.39 goals per game. The Maple Leafs were 6th in shots on goal with nearly 33 per game, and the power play unit was also 6th, scoring on 23.1% of their chances.

Auston Matthews is without a doubt, a stud. The center has 80 points on the season, with 47 of them goals. Mitchell Marner and John Tavares are next on the Maple Leafs, combining for an additional 127 points on the season.

Maple Leafs Need Help on Defense

Defensively, it was a different story for Toronto. The Maple Leafs also allowed teams to score more than 3.15 goals per game. Teams were getting nearly 32 shots per game on them, and the penalty kill was in the bottom 33%, as they held teams on 77.7% of their chances. Toronto stayed out of the box, for the most part, with just 6.7 minutes per game.

Frederik Anderson was the lead goaltender for the Maple Leafs, while Jack Campbell was the backup. Anderson started in 52 games, while Campbell came over late, and on the season has 26 starts. Anderson is 29-13-7 on the season, while Campbell has gone just 11-12-3. Both goaltenders are over 91% on the season in save percentage. Anderson has 3 shut-outs on the season.

The Maple Leafs snapped a three game losing streak just before the break in action with a 2-1 win at home over the Lightning.
