Toronto at Washington Game #5 Stanley Cup Playoffs Betting Odds

Posted by Peter Boysen on April 20, 2017 in

When this series began, it’s likely that the Washington Capitals thought there might not even be a Game 5, as they sit as the top seed in the Eastern Conference and were preparing to face a young Toronto team that squeaked into the second wild card position. However, the Capitals are fighting for their playoff lives in this series, as it sits all square at two games apiece with matters heading back to Washington. Let’s see if the NHL odds are in their favor.

Why should you bet on the Maple Leafs?

The youthful Maple Leafs are definitely ready for pressure on the biggest stage, as all four games in this series so far have been decided by a single goal, including three overtime finishes — and the Leafs have won two of them. The Capitals came roaring out of the gate in Game 4 with four goals in the first period, entering the first intermission with a 4-1 advantage, but the Maple Leafs simply refused to give up, making it a 5-4 game with 26 seconds left in the third period, but they simply ran out of time. Frederik Andersen has been a pleasant surprise in goal, getting just enough key stops to keep things close. His defense hung him out to dry in that first period of Game 4, but each game builds his confidence even further.

Why should you put your money on the Capitals?

Returning home is obviously a good sign for Washington, but the Leafs did take Game 2 down in DC. The emergence of the top line for the Caps (T.J. Oshie had a pair of goals, and Alex Ovechkin notched his third goal of the postseason) is also a strong sign. Braden Holtby played well enough for the win, stopping 30 of 34 Toronto shots. Toronto native Tom Wilson, who had the overtime winner for Washington in Game 1, brought his home city more pain in Game 4, scoring a pair of goals. However, the Capitals need to prepare for another full 60-minute effort from the opportunistic Maple Leafs.

Betting Pick and Final Score Prediction

The pressure in this series ramps up with each passing game. With the series returning to Washington, I like the Capitals to win the game, 4-3, in overtime, and take a 3-2 lead in the quarterfinals.
