Why should you bet on Detroit?
The talent advantage in this series belongs to the Lightning, so the Red Wings have to prevail with hustle and physicality. That was the recipe for success in Game 3, when Tampa Bay only mustered 16 shots on net, making it an easy night for Detroit netminder Petr Mrazek. Henrik Zetterberg and Andreas Athanasiou both scored in the second period, and their desperation is what held the day. Mrazek played his first postseason game in net, after Jimmy Howard had given up losses in Game 1 and 2, and the momentum shifted as did the puck possession. If Tampa Bay cannot show any more hunger in Game 4, this series will go back to Florida tied 2-2.
Why should you put your money on the Lightning?
Ben Bishop played a solid game in goal for Tampa Bay, stopping 28 of 30 Detroit shots. However, he was not spectacular, as Athanasiou’s goal was a soft, floating shot that found its way between Bishop’s stick and the post. Zetterberg’s goal was more controversial, as it looked like it went in off his skate, The Lightning need to find some discipline, as Red Wings agitator Brendan Smith hit people and drew a penalty late in the third period to give Detroit a man advantage. Tampa Bay’s top scoring line got shut out — and that’s not likely to happen again.
Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction
Detroit was hungry enough to win Game 3, but hunger only gets you so far against talent. I like Tampa Bay to figure out puck possession and distribution and match the Red Wings’ physicality in a disciplined manner. I’m predicting a 3-2 Lightning win.
