NHL Stanley Cup Finals Preview: San Jose at Pittsburgh, Game 5
In all four of the Stanley Cup Final games so far this year, the Pittsburgh Penguins have jumped out to an early lead. Three of those four times, that early goal has sparked the Penguins to a win. They now lead the series against the San Jose Sharks 3 games to 1, and they can hoist the Stanley Cup on Thursday night in front of their home crowd by winning Game 5. Why should you bet on San Jose?
When a team has their collective backs against the walls, they give their absolute best. The Sharks have played solid road hockey this season, and they dealt the Penguins a 3-1 loss in their own building in the regular season this year. Martin Jones has been tremendous in goal for the Sharks during this postseason — after his first season as a starter — so if the Sharks can combine their stellar speed with tough defense, the way they did against the St. Louis Blues in the Western Conference finals — they have a chance to send the series back out to the West Coast.
Why should you put your money on the Penguins?
The Stanley Cup Final went to a best-of-seven format in 1939. Since then, 32 Finals have seen a team take a 3-1 series lead, and 31 of those teams went on to win the Cup, or 97 percent. Who is the only team to cough up that lead? The 1942 Detroit Red Wings, who saw the Toronto Maple Leafs come all the way back to take the Cup. In this series, the Penguins have never trailed — except when Joonas Donskoi scored the overtime winner for San Jose in Game 3. Pittsburgh hasn’t gotten out to more than a two-goal lead at any time, but they have controlled the series against a team that is fast — but not quite as fast.
Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction
The Penguins beat the New York Rangers and the Washington Capitals in five games apiece — and I believe they’ll do it again against San Jose, and hoist their fourth Stanley Cup. I’m predicting a 3-2 Penguins win.
