Why should you bet on the Rangers?

While the overtime win over the Red Wings marked a win in a defensive effort, the Rangers normally excel on both offense and defense. They are fifth in the NHL in goals (2.8 per game) and 11th in goals permitted (2.5). While their special teams are a little spotty, they are a strong offensive bunch and will give the New Jersey defense all they can handle. The Rangers are looking to solidify their position in second in the Metropolitan. While it doesn’t look like they will be able to catch the Capitals for the division title, they will still get a favorable matchup in the first round of the playoffs with a second-place finish.

Why should you put your money on New Jersey?

Even though they gave up four goals to the Washington Capitals, no one plays better defense than the New Jersey Devils. They rank #1 in the NHL in goals against (2.3). The problem, of course, is their offense, as their 2.2 goals per game still have them ranked #30 — dead last — in all of hockey. That’s why they’ve lost six of their last nine — they’ve only lost one game by more than one goal, but they’ve only scored 16 total goals in those nine, including the three they scored in their loss to the Capitals. If the Devils can contain the Rangers’ offensive attack, then they will have a solid chance. Another smart play here might be the under (if it’s 3.5 or fewer) or the Devils with the spread (if it’s 1.5 or more).

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

The Rangers are scoring in bunches right now. I don’t think that the Devils can stop their attack — and I don’t think they can outscore them. I see the Rangers winning, 3-2.
