NHL Playoff Preview: St. Louis at Dallas, Game 5

Posted by Aaron . on May 6, 2016 in

On Saturday afternoon, the Stars and Blues meet in Game 5 of what really is down to a best-of-3 series now, with the teams level at two games apiece. Many prognosticators (including yours truly) had written the Stars off after the defense folded in overtime in Game 2 and throughout basically all of Game 3 as the Stars fell, 6-1. Then, as they say, something changed. Game 4 showed the Dallas defense back on track and goalie Kari Lehtonen back in focus, and so matters went to overtime, and Cody Eakin scored the game-winner just 2:58 into the extra period to show just how quickly momentum can change. Find the latest NHL spread here.

NHL Playoff Preview: St. Louis Blues at Dallas Stars, Game 5

Why should you bet on St. Louis?

The Blues have been steady all series long. They start with solid defense, and when the opportunity strikes, they slash forward on offense and take advantage of the errors that the other teams make. They are a patient, insidious team, with Frank Pietrangelo leading a bruising corps of defensemen that keep pucks in the zone and feed such playmakers as Vladimir Tarasenko going the other way. The Stars are sure to make a mistake or two, as they have every game, and when the Blues have made their own mistakes, Brian Elliott has been there to make the big stop more often than not. That combination could take them to a Game 5 win.

Why should you put your money on the Stars?

The Stars’ advantage — a shock-and-awe offense — is also their disadvantage at times. They get so focused on heading down the ice that they make a boneheaded turnover, or someone forgets to stay back and cover the opposition, as happened in the Blues’ goal to get the scoring started in Game 4. If they remember to play defense, and if their goalie is locked in, then they should win and paint the Blues into a 3-2 corner.

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

The crowd at the American Airlines Center will be fired up after that overtime win in Game 4, and it looks like the Stars have things figured out on the defensive end. I’m predicting a 3-2 victory for Dallas.
