NHL Playoff Preview: St. Louis at Dallas, Game 7
The St. Louis Blues are on their way to a second consecutive Game 7 in their chase of the Stanley Cup this year, as the Dallas Stars did the seemingly unthinkable in Game 6. After getting simply undressed in Game 5, losing 4-1, the Stars chased the previously undentable Brian Elliott in the first period, tallying three goals on just seven shots. After the first period ended with the Stars up 3-0, Dallas went into “protect-the-lead” mode, and their defense was outstanding, and their goalie, Kari Lehtonen, was even better, posting 35 saves, including a point-blank stop on Jayden Schwartz with under 20 seconds on the clock, as the Stars bent but did not break, holding onto a 3-2 win to force the seventh game. Why should you bet on St. Louis?
Except for the first period of Game 6, and the third period of Game 2, the Blues have played steady defense throughout this series. Dallas has the swifter and more dominant offensive attack, but the Blues can strike quickly if the opponent makes a mistake. The Stars have shown a penchant for making crucial mistakes at precisely the wrong moments in games, and they have paid dearly for it, during the regular season and at moments in their series against the Wild and now the Blues. The Blues can reset their game and wait for Dallas to make mistakes, just like in Game 4…and just like Game 5.
Why should you put your money on the Stars?
The Stars do lead the NHL in goals scored this season. They also are just about unbeatable when they stay with their men on defense, and when their goalie is focused and sharp. Game 6 showed you just how transcendent Kari Lehtonen can be. I will admit that I am personally staying far away from this game bettingwise, because I simply have no idea which Stars team will show up. They could win 5-2 or lose 5-2. But if you like the Stars in this one, it should be because of all of the good things you saw in Game 6 — an overwhelming offense that drove the starting goalie to the bench and then a defense that clamped down and refused to let the game get away.
Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction
When the chips have been down on the Stars this season, they have paid off. I like the Stars to impose their will on St. Louis one more time and advance to the conference finals with a 4-3 win.
