NHL Playoff Preview: San Jose at Nashville, Game 3
On Tuesday night, the San Jose Sharks will be in Music City to take on the Nashville Predators in the third game of their Western Conference semifinal round. The Sharks now hold a 2-0 lead on the Predators after Martin Jones made 37 saves in a 3-2 San Jose win on Sunday. The Predators looked better than their fairly anemic Game 1 effort (although, to be fair, travel and the grind of a seven-game series had to take their toll), but they are still now in a hole. Why should you bet on San Jose?
The Sharks ran a terrific forecheck on the Predators in Game 2, using their forwards to disrupt the Predators’ defensemen and force turnovers. The Sharks might be the fastest team in the playoffs, and all it takes is one mistake by the opposition to send the puck the other way and launch multiple shots at the goal. The Joe Thornton line had a lot of success pinning the defensemen Ryan Ellis and Mattias Ekholm stopped up in their zone after turnovers. Martin Jones was terrific once again, showing a trend that began against the Kings. He held his position and didn’t give up any juicy rebounds for the Predators to jam home.
Why should you put your money on the Predators?
Pekka Rinne is an underrated factor in this series for Nashville. He has played two fairly solid games and made a number of fantastic saves. If the Predators can tighten up their coverage in front of him, he is the sort of goalie who can steal games, particularly on home ice. The Predators have done a good job limiting their own penalties, so if they can figure out how to stop the Shark power play and score when they have the man advantage (they were 0 for 3 in Game 2), they can turn the tide in this series.
Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction
I like the plucky Predators to take advantage of home ice and grab a win. I’m predicting a 3-2 Nashville victory.
