New York at Florida NHL Odds Analysis

The series opener between the Florida Panthers and the New York Islanders was a chaotic scrum, as the Isles roared back to win Game 1, 5-4, on Thursday night. Most NHL playoff games don’t happen on consecutive nights, but arena conflicts arise sometimes, and so Game 2 is coming 24 hours later, giving the Panthers a chance to turn the tables and bring the series level in the second game, hoping to send things up to Brooklyn tied at a game apiece. Why should you bet on the Panthers?

The Panthers simply poured shot after shot on the Islander net, sending 46 shots on net. Thomas Greiss was good enough for the Islanders, but if the Panthers continue that sort of onslaught, their goal numbers have to go up. After all, the Panthers were 27-0-2 this year when they tallied at least four goals, so the numbers have to go this way. Interestingly, the Panthers did not sell out this game, with about 2,000 empty seats. That does not bode well for a team in just its second playoff series since 2000-2001 — and without a playoff series win since 1996. However, the Panthers went 8-4-2 on the second game of a back-and-back this year, so they are comfortable coming out ahead on tired legs.

Why should you put your money on the Islanders?

The Islanders found themselves down by a goal three different times in Game 1, and they brought things level each time. John Tavares netted a goal and dished out a pair of assists, and Thomas Greiss was good enough in net in his first playoff start to make key saves late in the game. Greiss made 42 saves and held the Panthers off after they turned a 5-3 deficit into a 5-4 one with 13:04 remaining in the third period. The Isles were able to kill two of three penalties in the game. This sort of resilient effort often builds huge momentum, particularly for road teams.

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

As people from New York might say it, this was a yuuuuge win for the Islanders. I look for the Panthers to come out frustrated after peppering the Islanders’ backup goalie with 46 shots and still coming up on the short end. I’m predicting a 3-2 New York win, sending the series to Brooklyn with the Panthers in an 0-2 hole.
