The Nashville Predators and the St. Louis Blues meet in the postseason for the first time in their Western Conference semifinal series, opening Wednesday night in the shadows of the Gateway Arch. The Predators shocked the Chicago Blackhawks with a four-game sweep in the first round, while the Blues also advanced in upset fashion, taking down the Minnesota Wild in five games. Who will prevail in the NHL odds in Game 1?

Why should you bet on the Predators?

Pekka Rinne is the hottest goaltender in all of hockey right now, as he posted a 0.70 goals against average, a 0.976 save percentage and a pair of shutouts in his four wins against Chicago. No other postseason goalie had numbers that were better. Chicago put 126 shots on net, but only three of them found their way past Rinne. The Nashville defense helped, forcing the Blackhawks to shoot from distance and keeping the ice in front of Rinne clear. Also, they averaged 52.75 shot attempts per game against a Chicago team that plays much better than the Blues. They should approach 60 against St. Louis if they keep that same level of intensity.

Why should you put your money on the Blues?

Nashville won three of the five regular-season meetings between the Predators and the Blues, but four of those meetings came before the Blues fired Ken Hitchcock and brought in Mike Yeo behind the bench. In that last meeting, the Blues skated to a 4-1 rout of the Preds. The Blues don’t have big names on their offense, but they have players who will attack at crucial times, such as Paul Stastny, Vladimir Tarasenko and Alexander Steen. The problem for the Blues comes on depth up front, as they were able to roar out to big leads against the mistake-prone Wild but found themselves holding off a barrage of shots in the second and third periods. Can they play more evenly against the Predators?

Betting Pick and Final Score Prediction

The Blues will not roll over easily for Nashville, but the Predators come in white-hot to this conference semifinal. I see the Predators stealing Game 1 in St. Louis, 2-1.
