The Nashville Predators (32-24- 11, 75 points) head to the Bay Area to take on the San Jose Sharks (40-19- 7, 87 points) in a Western Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon. The Predators lost in Los Angeles to the Kings, falling 3-2 in overtime, on Thursday night. The Sharks took an impressive home win over Washington on Thursday, prevailing 4-2. Why should you bet on the Predators?

The Predators are not playing defense with the same vigor that they sowed last year, as they permit 2.8 goals per game and are just 22nd on the penalty kill (79.8%). In their loss to the Kings, they had a third-period lead, but they permitted a goal to Marian Gaborik in the third period, and then Jarome Iginla put the game away for the Kings in overtime. All three Los Angeles goals came on the power play, as the result of defensive mistakes by the Predators — and then slow rotation on the penalty kill. If you like the Predators against the Sharks, then you think they can play 60 minutes of solid defense against a talented offense.

Why should you put your money on the Sharks?

San Jose showed some of that same offensive prowess against Washington that made them so scary to opponents down the stretch last season. They already have the third-best defense in goals permitted (2.3), so if they can ramp up their offense, they could be hoisting Lord Stanley’s cup in June. They have won five of six games, as they got a pair of goals from Logan Couture and tallies from Joe Pavelski and Joe Thornton. Martin Jones — the hero of last year’s playoff run — stood tall in net with 25 saves, and the Sharks held the Capitals 0 for 5 on their power play. That same combination of speedy offense and stifling defense will make for a long night for the Preds.

Betting Pick and Final Score Prediction

The Sharks are playing at a higher level than the Predators are right now. I like San Jose to defend their home ice and win, 4-1.
