Montreal at NY Rangers Game #5 NHL Playoffs Betting Odds & Pick

Posted by Peter Boysen on April 21, 2017 in

After one period on Thursday night, it looked like Montreal was heading to a 3-2 lead in their Eastern Conference quarterfinal series with the New York Rangers, as they went into the first intermission with a 2-1 lead. However, New York would not surrender another goal but instead would prevail, 3-2, in overtime. Now the series moves back to Manhattan, with the Rangers preparing to clinch the series at home. Can the Canadiens force a Game 7? Let’s see how the NHL odds are looking like for both teams.

Montreal at NY Rangers Game #5 NHL Playoffs Betting Odds & Pick

When: Saturday, April 22, 8:00pm ET
Where: Madison Square Garden, New York City
Radio: Montreal / New York
Live Stream:
NHL Odds: Rangers at -1½

Why should you bet on the Canadiens?

These Canadiens have done quite well at Madison Square Garden the past two regular seasons, thank you very much, and they swept the Blueshirts during the 2016-17 season. In Game 5, Montreal controlled the first 30 minutes, but then the Rangers started ramping up their hitting and turning on the counterattack with each turnover. Carey Price made a huge save in the game’s first minute on Mats Zuccarello, and if he brings his “A” game in Game 6, the Canadiens should be heading back north of the border for Game 7.

Why should you put your money on the Rangers?

Henrik Lundqvist stood tall in net once again, stopping 34 shots and not allowing anything by him after the end of the first period. He made a huge toe save on a Montreal breakaway with about 15 minutes gone in the third period. The aggressive style that the Rangers showed, particularly in the second and third periods and overtime, paid dividends as a shot from Chris  Kreider caromed off a Montreal defenseman’s stick and right to Mika Zibanejad, who swatted the puck past Price for the overtime win. The Rangers have now won two games in a row — do they have the grit to play a third consecutive aggressive game and overcome a Canadiens team that will have its collective back against the wall?

Betting Pick and Final Score Prediction

Madison Square Garden will be raucous on Saturday night, and I see the Rangers holding off a furious Canadiens attack and winning, 3-2.
