Why should you bet on the Stars?
The Stars have the NHL’s most prolific offense, pouring 265 goals into opposing nets during the regular season. They don’t just rely on one line, either: the had three players score 30 or more goals, the first team to accomplish this since New Jersey did it four seasons ago. They also have 12 players who posted at least 10 goals. Jamie Benn had 41 goals on the season and played especially well against Minnesota (three goals, six assists in five games). They also have the third-best power play (22.1%) in the league, and they get to take on the 27th best (77.9%) penalty kill, so the Stars should be able to score at will.
Why should you put your money on Minnesota?
The Stars have an Achilles heel on their defensive end, as they have had too many games open with them falling into a 1-0 or 2-0 hole and be unable to climb out. The Stars did permit 15 shorthanded goals this year, the worst in the NHL, so the Wild could exploit their willingness to take risks. Erik Haula and Jason Zucker have terrific speed and could turn the counterattack to their advantage. The Stars’ goalies, Kari Lehtonen and Antti Niemi, have shown a porous side at times this season, which could help the Wild, although it is also worth noting that the pair only allowed 19 goals in during the last 10 games of the season.
Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction
I like the Stars to open these playoffs with a statement win against the upstart Wild. I’m predicting a 4-1 Stars victory.
