NY Islanders vs Capitals Pro Hockey Spread Report

Posted by Aaron . on April 4, 2016 in

On Tuesday night, the New York Islanders head down to the nation’s capital to face the Washington Capitals in NHL Lines action. The Islanders (42-26-9, 93 points) are in fourth place in the Metropolitan Division and were absolutely undressed by the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday, 5-0, at home. The Islanders face the Tampa Bay Lightning at home on Monday before heading to Washington for Tuesday’s game. The Capitals (55-17-6, 116 points) are way out in front in the Metropolitan (and the East), but they suffered a 3-0 drubbing in Arizona on Saturday.

Why should you bet on the Islanders?

Before the Islanders took that beating in Pittsburgh, they had won three in a row. The Penguins went 11-1 in their last 12 to shoot past the Islanders and the Rangers in the Metropolitan standings. The Islanders have improved slightly in defense in the past few weeks, moving up to #11 (2.5 goals against), and their penalty kill remains #2 in the league (84.8%). Even so, the only way I would take the Islanders in this game is with a 2- or 2.5-goal line.

Why should you put your money on Washington?

The Capitals may have lost focus a little bit against the lowly Coyotes on Saturday, but I would expect them to get back in form to face a divisional foe at home. It’s not unusual for teams with such a big lead to get a little off task, but their statistical dominance of the NHL this season (second in goals scored, first in goals allowed, second in power play percentage and fourth on the penalty kill) makes them a solid pick every night. The Islanders are slipping down the East standings and are at risk of losing their wild card spot, and the Caps will be motivated to help send them further down the ladder.

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

I predict that Washington will return home with plenty of focus (and frustration) to take out on the visiting Islanders. I’m picking a 5-2 Caps win.
