On Thursday, the Edmonton Oilers head south of the border to take on the Minnesota Wild in NHL betting action. The Oilers (26-36-7, 59 points) are in sixth place in the Pacific Division and are coming off a 3-0 blanking by San Jose at home on Tuesday. The Wild (31-26-10, 72 points) are in fifth place in the Central Division and fell at home to the St. Louis Blues on Sunday, 4-2.

Why should you bet on the Wild?

The Wild are a young and exciting team that are a few pieces away from contending for a Stanley Cup playoff spot. Their defense has improved to 11th in the NHL (2.5 goals against per game), but their offense is a little spotty still (#18, 2.6 goals per game). Their power play has improved to #14 (19.0%), but their penalty kill is still a bit porous (#28, 75.9%). However, they are miles ahead of Edmonton in terms of talent, so if their defense can hold, they should be able to manage affairs against the Oil.

Why should you put your money on Edmonton?

The Oilers have been in a real funk lately. The only way I would take them in this game is if the line were 2 goals in the Wild’s favor, because I don’t think they can keep up with Minnesota’s young skaters. However, i do think that Edmonton’s defense can keep things close enough against a hit-and-miss Wild offense to lose by just a goal, so I would consider this with a 1.5 or 2-goal line.

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

I like Minnesota to defend their home ice and beat Edmonton. I don’t see this being a rout, though, so I’m picking a 3-2 final score.
