Why should you put your money on the Stars?
Dallas has been solid on offense all year long. They are second only to Washington in offense (3.2 goals per game), and their power play is deadly (#6, 21.8%). They have three lines that can pour in the goals when things are going well, and they can score in bunches. The Canadiens have been on the ropes ever since Carey Price went down, and their defense and goaltending have both been suspect since. This defensive malaise is what took a team that was atop the Eastern Conference and sent them to the bottom of the standings.
Why should you bet on Montreal?
The Stars don’t play consistent hockey right now. They win three and lose two. Then they lose four and win five. The road has been a particularly treacherous place for the Central Division leaders. Given that the Canadiens still kill penalties well (#4, 84.5%), the Stars can’t plan on waiting for a power play to produce all of their offense. They didn’t pile the goals on Ottawa on Sunday, so they’ll need more of a spark in Montreal. The Canadiens have a raucous home crowd that could make the Stars’ collective head spin.
Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction
I’m picking the Stars to take care of business against a Montreal defense that won’t be able to handle their high-powered attack. I’m picking the Stars to win 3-2.
