On Thursday night, the Dallas Stars host the Colorado Avalanche in NHL online betting action. The Stars (48-23-9, 105 points) are in first place in the Central Division, but they just lost 3-1 to Anaheim on Sunday night. The Avalanche (39-37-4, 82 points) are in sixth place in the Central Division and lost in Nashville, 4-3, on Tuesday.

Why should you bet on the Avalanche?

The Stars have developed a way of thrashing the other teams that are their peers (see: Chicago, St. Louis) but then getting embarrassed by teams way down the standings (including these same Avalanche). What’s the problem? Sometimes it’s a lack of focus, and sometimes it’s a lack of defense (to be fair, the Stars have had some injuries on their blue line) and sometimes it’s mystifying inattention from both of their goalies. Since you don’t know which Dallas team is going to show up against a non-playoff team like the Avs, it’s as likely as not to be a 3-1 score either way.

Why should you put your money on Dallas?

Dallas does have the most prolific goal-scoring offense in the NHL, at 3.2 per game. You might not think that (especially after they only put one puck in the net against the Ducks on Sunday), but they do score in bunches. The Avs have the 25th best defense (2.9 goals allowed per game) in the NHL, so there should be all kinds of opportunities for the Stars to pour in goals.

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

I’m predicting that the Stars will realize that playoff seeding is important and play some defense against Colorado. I’m projecting a 3-1 Stars victory.
