Longshot to Win NHL 2021 Stanley Cup
The Washington Capitals are under new guidance this season as Peter Laviolette has taken over. Washington has taken off recently, climbing up the standings in the East Division. After going 7-2-1 in their last 10 games, the Capitals have climbed to second place, just two points behind the division-leading New York Islanders.
With a 15-6-4 record, the Caps are definitely headed towards a playoff berth. Offensively, they’ve scored 82 goals, putting them as the 7th-highest scoring team in the league. Defensively they’re not as good, as they’ve given up 78 goals, good for 19th in the league. Washington is one of the best penalty killing teams in the league, as they’ve killed 82.7% of their opponents power plays. Speaking of power plays, the Capitals are very good when they’re on the power play. They’re the 6th best team in the league on the power play.
Defensively, they haven’t been as strong as they had hoped to be. When they allowed Brandon Holtby to leave as a free agent, they knew that they would have some issues in the net. They thought that they had found their solution when they signed Henrik Lundqvist. However, after having open heart surgery, Lundqvist opted to sit out the 2021 season.
Ilya Samsonov had a very good rookie season last season, and has taken over in the pipes for the Capitals. He has been decent, but has still had his lapses. The defense in general has been the Capitals weakness, and if they’re going to make a run at the Stanley Cup, they’ll need to make some adjustments on that end of the ice.
Offensively, Washington can score with the best of them. Alexander Ovechkin is still one of the top offensive players in the league. Washington also has a great collection of forwards that can put the puck in the net. John Carlson is one of the best offensive defensemen in the league, and Washington brought in some help for him in the offseason. On the offensive end, the Capitals have the tools to make a long playoff run.
Sitting at a +2500, the Washington Capitals are a great longshot pick to win the Stanley Cup. If they continue to play as well as they have recently, their odds may get better, and you won’t get as much bang for your buck. Where they’re sitting at now, we really like the odds that they have and we think that they can make a long playoff run. Get your action on the Washington Capitals in now!
