The Anaheim Ducks (34-22- 10, 78 points) head to the Second City to take on the Chicago Blackhawks (42-18- 5, 89 points) in a Western Conference showdown on Thursday night. The Ducks took a 4-3 shootout win over the Nashville Predators on Tuesday night, while the Chicago Blackhawks beat those same Predators on the road on Saturday, 5-3, and will have had the four days to rest before hosting the Ducks. Why should you bet on the Ducks?

The Ducks win with their defense — they are sixth on the penalty kill (84.8%) and eighth in goals permitted per game (2.5). Their offense only generates 2.6 goals per game (good for #20 in the NHL). Against the Predators, they were able to take advantage of some defensive lapses and some solid goaltending, particularly in the shootout, as they advanced in the fifth round. Jonathan Bernier posted 24 saves on the night and did not let any goals in during the shootout. The key for the night was Patrick Eaves, who had two assists on the night, as well as the game-winner in the shootout. His commitment to clogging up the space in front of the opposing goalie makes life a lot easier for the rest of the team.

Why should you put your money on the Blackhawks?

The Blackhawks remain one of the most balanced teams in the West, outscoring the opposition by about a half-goal a game. Their weakness is on the penalty kill (76.9%, 28th in the NHL), but against Nashville they got enough offense to cover up any mistakes, with two goals from Patrick Kane, and a goal each from Brian Campbell, Jordin Tootoo and Jonathan Toews. The Blackhawks have now picked up 12 wins in their last 13 games, and a big reason was the 32 saves that Corey Crawford made on the night. Chicago moved into first place in the Central Division ahead of Minnesota, but the Wild have three games in hand. That balance of offense and defense should serve Chicago well at home against a Predators team that is on the ropes.

Betting Pick and Final Score Prediction

I like the plucky defense that Anaheim plays, but I don’t see them slowing down the Blackhawks on the road enough to win. I predict a final score of Chicago 3, Anaheim 1.
