What a difference a couple of weeks can make, right? It was just two weeks ago that the Chicago Blackhawks looked like the dominant team in the West, spanking Dallas 5-1 on the road. Then, the Blackhawks went 0-2-1 the next week before falling at home to those same Dallas Stars. In the East, the Capitals are still atop the table, but they are not playing at the same white-hot pace that they had been. Let’s take a look at updated NHL online free picks.

Updated 2016 Stanley Cup Odds

Washington Capitals 4/1

The Caps still have strong play on both ends of the ice, but the grind of the long NHL season makes it just about impossible to keep up the wins at the rate they were piling them up — just ask Dallas, Chicago and Montreal about that same grind. However, even in their 3-2 loss in Dallas on Saturday, while the Caps gave up way too many chances in that pivotal second period, they gathered themselves and were within a shot off the post from tying it in regulation.

Dallas Stars, L.A. Kings 5/1

The Stars’ flaw is that they sometimes forget to play defense, and their quick attacking style can leave them vulnerable, allowing them to give up goals in bunches. Both of their goalies are good, but neither one is the sort of Carey Price or Ed Belfour type who will steal games for you. The Kings tend to fall the other way — their offense can leave them in the lurch when they need it most. However, these two teams are the class of the West right now.

Chicago Blackhawks, Tampa Bay Lightning, New York Rangers 10/1

The Blackhawks could right things in another two weeks and be playing dominant hockey again — they definitely have the talent to be at the top of the West. The same goes for Tampa Bay — the Blackhawks’ opponent in the Stanley Cup Finals last year. Both of those teams have suffered a bit of that Stanley Cup hangover from last season. The Blueshirts are riding the hot goaltending of Henrik Lundqvist once again. Now let’s look at the rest of the league’s odds:Anaheim Ducks 12/1Florida Panthers 14/1St. Louis Blues 16/1The Blues have a penchant for bowing out in the first round of the playoffs, no matter how solid their regular season has been, so be careful before committing that money to the Blues’ Cup chances.Minnesota Wild, N.Y.
