Week 1 Panthers vs Ravens NFL Preseason Odds & Pick
The Carolina Panthers went 15-1 last year during the regular season, and quarterback Cam Newton brought home the trophy as MVP of the league. The Panthers rolled all the way to their second Super Bowl berth but failed to win a title, falling in an upset to Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos. The Ravens did not fare nearly as well, missing quarterback Joe Flacco for the majority of the season after he tore both his ACL and MCL in his left knee. Don’t expect to see Flacco take the field in this preseason opener as the team is being extremely cautious. Let’s take a look at some NFL odds on this game.

Why should you bet on the Ravens?
If the Ravens grind this one out, it will be because the Baltimore defense holds up well against a Carolina attack that likely will not feature much (if any) Cam Newton on the field. The Panthers know what they have in Newton, and we’re a long way from Week 1 of the regular season, so there really isn’t much reason to trot him out on the field on Thursday for more than a series or so. The Ravens have a lot of defensive kinks to work out from last season, so I expect to see more of their starters for longer in the game. Also, there is likely to be a lot of hangover factor from the Panthers early on as they still try to pick themselves up from that Super Bowl loss.
Why should you put your money on Carolina?
The Ravens don’t have a signature tailback or wide receiver operating alongside Flacco in this offense, even on the first string, while Carolina has an ironclad defensive unit, which means that the Ravens are likely to struggle to move the ball. If Newton does take the field, he will want to make a statement, which means that it could be 10-0 or 14-0 Panthers after a couple of series if Newton does lead the team. If you pick the Panthers, you’re expecting them to come out of the chute wanting to make noise right away.
Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction
We will see the same hunger out of Carolina this year that we saw out of the Seahawks when they went to their consecutive Super Bowls, and I like them to start that tone right away, but then I think things will slog down once Newton and the first team take a seat. I’m expecting a 17-13 Panther win.
