Tennessee vs Oakland NFL Preseason Week 3 Expert Pick

Posted by Peter Boysen on August 27, 2016 in

Two of the up-and-coming teams in the AFC will meet in the Oakland Coliseum on Saturday night, as the Tennessee Titans square off with the Oakland Raiders. Both teams are 1-1 so far in the preseason, and both are looking to get on the right side of .500 for the first time in a long time. The Titans have added a duo of running backs to take the offensive pressure off Marcus Mariota, and the Oakland Raiders have a ferocious pass rush on defense and an exciting passing duo on offense of Derek Carr and Amari Cooper. Check the betting lines for this and the other Week 3 matchups.

Why should you bet on Tennessee?

Marcus Mariota is putting up an unbelievable number this preseason. The number isn’t passing yardage or touchdowns, though — it’s his completion rate of 93.3%. He has gone 14 for 15 in his two preseason appearances, connecting for 149 yards, a touchdown — and an interception on his only pass that did not end up in a receiver’s arms. He is precise even when on the run, and he has a rifle arm. Against Oakland, I don’t expect the Titans to show the whole playbook, but even with a simpler scheme Mariota has a chance to embarrass the Raider D. DeMarco Murray will key the rushing attack for the Titans, so the Raiders can’t pin their ears back and commit to big-time pass rush.

Why should you put your money on the Raiders?

Given the mess at quarterback in Denver and the exciting young talent on the Oakland roster, a lot of prognosticators have the Raiders scooting by the Broncos and the relatively pedestrian Chiefs and winning the AFC West. It’s true that, one the seven offensive possessions that have featured the Oakland starters, the team has only scored two field goals. However, the Raiders haven’t shown much of their playbook yet, and since Week 3 is generally the dress rehearsal for the regular season, expect to see them open up some more options. As mobile as Mariota is, the Raiders have a pass rush that will keep him from settling in and feeling comfortable.

My Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

I’m excited about the potential of both of these young squads. However, I think that traveling across a couple of time zones will give the Titans a bit of a disadvantage, and I also like the Raider Nation to turn the Coliseum into a raucous place. The Raiders will ride that energy to a 27-23 win.
