Tampa Bay at Carolina Week 5 Betting Pick & Prediction

Posted by Peter Boysen on October 8, 2016 in

The fact that Tampa Bay has started the season 1-3 doesn’t surprise too many observers — quarterback Jameis Winston has entered his sophomore season, when many signal-callers have a bit of a setback. On the other hand, Carolina sitting at 1-3 represents a major surprise. The Panthers just took a 48-33 whipping in Atlanta and have major questions to answer on both sides of the ball, particularly with quarterback Cam Newton unlikely to play thanks to a concussion. Take a look at all of our NFL betting lines for this weekend’s contests.

Tampa Bay at Carolina Week 5 Betting Pick & Prediction

When: Monday, October 10, 2016, 8:30 pm.
Where: Bank of America Stadium, Charlotte, North Carolina
Radio: Tampa Bay / Carolina
Stream Option: NFL Live
NFL Odds: Carolina (-6)

Why should you put your money on the Buccaneers?

The Tampa Bay defense brings a powerful pass rush, as the Denver Broncos found out last week when quarterback Trevor Siemian went down with a shoulder injury. However, the Buccaneer secondary needs to tighten things up, as backup Paxton Lynch came on and went 14 for 24 for 170 yards and a touchdown.

On offense, Jameis Winston has had difficulty facing some of the league’s elite defenses. Against the Denver Broncos, he went just 17 for 35 for 179 yards and two interceptions. The fact that Denver shut down the rushing game as well left Winston with a lot of pressure to generate offense, and that pressure forced him into poor decisions.

If you’re betting on the Buccaneers in this game, you think that Winston will be able to find receivers down the field, and the Buccaneer defense will manage a Carolina offense that will have a much slower pace with backup Derek Anderson at the helm.

Why should you bet on the Panthers

When Anderson came on in relief of Newton last week, he played fairly well, going 17 for 23 for 172 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Unfortunately, two of those passes that he didn’t complete ended up in the hands of the defense.

The Panthers should have little trouble moving the ball against the Buccaneers, but can they stop Tampa Bay’s offense? Last week, Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan threw for a franchise record 503 yards — and wideout Julio Jones was responsible for receptions totaling 300 of those yards, another franchise record. When the Panthers let cornerback Josh Norman depart in free agency, they knew that opponents would have more opportunities in the passing game, but things have gotten out of hand. If you bet on Carolina, you believe that Winston won’t be able to find openings in the Panther secondary.

My Betting Pick and Final Score Prediction

If this game were in Tampa, I would probably go the other way with this pick. However, I like the Panthers to show maturity and take care of an upstart opponent in Week 5. I’m predicting a 23-13 Carolina win.
