San Francisco at Detroit NFL Betting Lines & Preview

Posted by Aaron . on December 24, 2015 in

The San Francisco 49ers (4-10) and the Detroit Lions (5-9) meet Sunday at Detroit’s Ford Field at 1:00pm Eastern time. The two teams have almost identical records but very different fortunes. The Lions have won at Lambeau Field this year for the first time since 1991 and are coming off a road whipping of the New Orleans Saints on Monday night. The San Francisco 49ers are in disarray, which is why the Lions are favored to win by 8.5 points. The over/under is an extremely low 40.5 points. Click here for NFL betting lines.

Why should you bet on the Lions (-8.5)?

Matthew Stafford has shaken off a dreadful start to have a solid season, completing 66.1 percent of his passes with 27 touchdown passes and 13 picks. Ameer Abdullah leads the Lions on the ground with 514 yards and two scores. The Lion D permits 25.9 points per game and has 22 takeaways (-10 turnover ratio). However, their strong showings since that 0-7 start show a team that has really turned the corner. Had they been able to sweep Green Bay, we’d be talking about a playoff team instead of crowing about next year.

Why should you take San Francisco (+8.5)?

San Francisco averages just 14.4 points per game, worst in the NFL, with a -3 turnover ratio. Blaine Gabbert has completed 62.4 percent of his passes since taking over for Colin Kaepernick. Running back has been a carousel thanks to an epidemic of injuries, so Kendall Gaskins and Travaris Cadet are expected to get the bulk of the work this week. The Niners permit 24.2 points per game — and giving up a -10 point differential per week is not the way to win.

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

I like the Lions to continue what has been an inspired second half of the season, even with that slip to the Packers notwithstanding. I see them winning and covering…31-10.
