Two teams that had a very successful 2020 season will meet in Week 1 of the NFL season, as the Pittsburgh Steelers will travel to Buffalo to take on the Bills. The Steelers finished 12-4 and were the champions of the AFC North. After starting off 11-0, they tailed off at the end of the season and lost their first playoff game to the Cleveland Browns.
The Buffalo Bills ended the New England Patriots’ reign as AFC East champions. It was Buffalo’s first divisional title since 1995. Buffalo went 13-3 and advanced to the AFC Championship game, where they lost a tough one to the Kansas City Chiefs. With all that in mind, let’s take a look at both teams and how they arrive into this matchup so you can bet against their NFL odds.
Pittsburgh Steelers vs Buffalo Bills Betting Preview
Pittsburgh Steelers Preview
Ben Roethlisberger is nearing the end of his career. He played well at the start of last season, but towards the end, his age was starting to show. Big Ben hopes that he has enough left in the tank to lead the Steelers to the playoffs again this season.
Roethlisberger will have rookie Najee Harris in the backfield. The former Alabama star can run the ball well and is also a threat coming out of the backfield to catch a pass. JuJu Smith-Schuster, Chase Claypool, and Dionte Johnson will make up one of the top receiving trios in the league.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Steelers will be able to get to the quarterback. Led by TJ Watt, the Steelers should wreak havoc on the opposition’s quarterback. With a very good pass rush, Pittsburgh should be among the league leaders in turnovers. If the defense can stay healthy, they’ll be one of the top units in the league.
Buffalo Bills Preview
Josh Allen had one of the best seasons in league history for a quarterback. He passed for nearly 5000 yards, throwing 45 touchdowns to just ten interceptions. Allen is one of the top dual-threat quarterbacks in the league, as when the pocket breaks down, he can gain good yardage with his legs.
Stefon Diggs has become one of the top wide receivers in the league. He and Allen have great chemistry and should combine for a lot of yardage this season. The Bills have a lot of depth in the backfield, and with Diggs drawing a lot of attention, the other receivers should be able to make some plays.
Defensively, the Bills improved throughout the 2020 season. They don’t really have a superstar, but this blue-collar unit seems to get big stops in crunch time. They made some improvements through free agency and the draft, so they should be even better this season.
The oddsmakers have set the Buffalo Bills as 6.5 point home favorites. Buffalo is 9-2 against the spread in their last 11 games. The Steelers are 10-3 ATS in their last 13 games as underdogs. So, how do we think this one will end up?
We’re just not sure how well the Pittsburgh offensive line will be able to protect Roethlisberger. If he is hurried all day, it’ll be tough for Pittsburgh to keep up. The Bills are the better team, and we think they win this one by a touchdown, and they’ll cover the 6.5.
