NFL Preseason Week 3 Steelers vs Saints Betting Preview

Posted by Peter Boysen on August 25, 2016 in

The Pittsburgh Steelers head down to the Crescent City to take on the New Orleans Saints in Week 3 of the preseason hoping for their first win. The Philadelphia Eagles shut them out a week ago at home, 17-0, although Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger did not take the field and Landry Jones got the start — throwing four costly picks. The Steelers didn’t run well either, picking up just 50 yards on 21 carries. The Saints also come in with an 0-2 preseason record after falling 16-9 to the Houston Texans last week. Drew Brees struggled in the passing game, going 5 for 8 for just 29 yards and an interception. Check out the NFL odds for this matchup as well as the rest of the Week 3 preseason schedule.

Why should you bet on Pittsburgh?

Remember — Week 3 of the preseason features the dress rehearsal for Week 1 of the real deal, so you should bet this game more like you would bet a regular season tilt. The Steelers are expected to start Roethlisberger, which means the team should be able to move up and down the field. The Saints have a pass defense that doesn’t rush the quarterback all that well but also gives up a lot of big plays — a good combination for Roethlisberger to come in and make an impression. The Steelers are 7-3-2 ATS in their last 12 contests on the road — and the under is 4-0 in the Steelers’ last four games away from Pittsburgh.

Why should you put your money on the Saints?

New Orleans has long been a difficult place for opposing teams to visit, particularly in night games. The crowds are raucous, and strange things seem to happen to visiting squads. The Saints are 4-1 ATS in their last five contests, and the over has gone 5-0-1 in the Saints’ last six home games. These signs point to a bit of an explosion on offense. However, if Brees can’t move the team, the Saints are going to struggle. The keys will be production from the running game and hard work up front from the New Orleans O-line. If the Saints’ pass rush can get to Ben Roethlisberger, the task will get a lot easier.

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

Both of these teams have plenty of flaws, but I like Roethlisberger to do more for his team’s offense than Brees will do for his. I’m predicting a 27-17 Pittsburgh win.
