Week 3 Packers vs 49ers NFL Preseason Betting Pick

Posted by Peter Boysen on August 25, 2016 in

The Green Bay Packers head west to take on the San Francisco 49ers on Friday night. While the two teams have met 59 times in the regular season and seven times in the playoffs, this is just their fifth meeting in the preseason — and the first one in San Francisco since 1959. Overall, the Packers are 2-7 in preseason games in California, beating Oakland in 1970 and 1997. The 49ers come in with a lot of players to consider as they make their final roster decisions — and they also have to decide whether or not they really want Blaine Gabbert to be their starting quarterback. Check out the NFL lines for this and other Week 3 preseason contests.

Why should you bet on Green Bay?

When the two teams last met in the regular season, the Packers won a 17-3 tilt out in the Bay Area. Given that Week 3 of the pre-season is generally when teams are putting their best foot forward to prepare for the regular season, I think we’ll see a lot of Aaron Rodgers with a newly healed Jordy Nelson hauling in passes, with an offensive line that has recovered from the rash of injuries that made them such a Swiss cheese unit last year. A defensive unit led by Clay Matthews should give Gabbert all the pass rush that he wants, and if Chip Kelly decides to put Colin Kaepernick under center, the Packers have an above-average pass rush to force him into hasty decisions.

Why should you put your money on the 49ers?

Several players in the 49ers’ camp are working hard to impress Kelly and stay on the 53-man roster. Marcus Rush had a monster game in Week 2, picking up three sacks, and if he can get Aaron Rodgers on the ground a time or two, he will make that final roster. Vance McDonald showed a lot of confidence catching balls from Gabbert last week, and it looks like he might be the go-to guy in the passing game. Garrison Smith established himself as an alternative to Ian Williams and Glenn Dorsey, and a strong Week 3 could see him make the team as well. If enough of these individual players push through, the Niners could surprise the Pack.

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

I like the Packers to pick up the road win in this game. Rodgers & Co. are just a lot stronger than what the Niners are going to put out there, both on offense and defense. I’m predicting a 28-17 Green Bay win.
