NFL Preseason Week 1 Jacksonville Jaguars vs New York Jets

Posted by Peter Boysen on August 10, 2016 in

NFL lines for preseason games are usually fairly small and often just feature a slight advantage for the home team, reflecting the sense that home teams generally will come out ahead. In the case of both Jacksonville and the Jets, there are a lot of issues to work on up and down the roster that mean that we are more likely to see a lot of manpower experimentation than much in the way of competitive play. Jacksonville enters the year with some young talent, and a few sportswriters even think they can win the AFC South. The Jets return with a strong starting secondary and some stability at quarterback, with Ryan Fitzpatrick back in camp.

Why should you bet on the Jets?

The Jets are coming in off a 10-6 season that was ultimately a disappointment, as the team lost to Buffalo in Week 17 and found themselves watching the playoffs instead of snatching a wild card. Quarterback Bryce Petty went on the record this week saying he plans to do his best Brett Favre impression in this game, as he is ready to make a splash against an NFL defense. The Jets added Matt Forte in free agency after losing Chris Ivory and T.J. Yeldon, but he has some hamstring issues, so expect Bilal Powell to get the bulk of the carries. Look to Lorenzo Mauldin to key the pass rush, and for that solid Jet secondary to keep the Jaguars from doing much through the air.

Why should you put your money on Jacksonville?

The Jaguars come in with some exciting talent, including Chris Ivory, the tailback whom the Jaguars signed away from the Jets in free agency. Ivory went to the Pro Bowl last year after galloping for 1,070 yards. ESPN ranked the Jaguars as the best “U25” (under-25) team in the NFL, and their defense has two blue-chip draft picks coming in, in linebacker Myles Jack and cornerback Jalen Ramsey. Defensive Dante Fowler, the #1 overall pick from two years ago, is ready for a breakout sophomore season. If Blake Bortles and the first offensive unit can get things going, the Jaguars could win the battle of the starting units and hold on for the win.

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

Jacksonville is a young and exciting team, but the Jets are ahead of them on the talent and production ladder. I’m also excited to see what Petty will bring the Jets from the quarterback position. I’m predicting a 20-14 New York win.
