The New England Patriots will play their NFL betting odds when head to New York to take on the Jets in an AFC East matchup this Sunday at 1:00pm Eastern time. The Patriots already have clinched a bye for the first round in the playoffs, while the Jets are in the thick of a wild card race. The Pats are favored by 3.5 points.

Why should you pick the Patriots (-3.5)?

New England can clinch home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs if they win today. Last week, they rolled over the Tennessee Titans, 33-16. Rob Gronkowski appears to be back to full health, which gives Tom Brady a reliable target. It doesn’t seem to matter who the Patriots roll out there at tailback, as Brandon Bolden, James White and Joey Iosefa carried the ball effectively with the Titans. This squares with Bill Belichick’s philosophy that the position of tailback is basically an interchangeable slot. Even with holes in the Pats’ line, it’s hard to see the Jets getting this monkey off their back.

Why should you take the Jets (+3.5)?

The Jets have been playing terrific ball late in the season. Ryan Fitzpatrick, Eric Decker and Brandon Marshall have made a solid trio on the offensive side. However, the Jets did not look menacing at all last Saturday, as they barely escaped Dallas (who was led by unproven quarterback Kellen Moore) with a 19-16 win. Even so, the Jets should have more motivation than the Patriots, particularly since the Jets likely want to avenge the close they suffered in Foxboro earlier this year.

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

I think this is another week when the Patriots pay the price for all those injuries — after all, the O-line is still Swiss cheese, and both Julian Edelman and Danny Amendola will be out. I like the Jets to win in a close one, 24-20.
