NY Giants at Philadelphia Week 16 Betting Pick & Prediction

Posted by Peter Boysen on December 20, 2016 in

The New York Giants (10-4) head down I-95 to take on the Philadelphia Eagles in an NFC East matchup on Thursday night. The Giants knocked off the Detroit Lions, 17-6, on Sunday, while the Eagles (5-9) dropped their fifth straight to the Baltimore Ravens. The Giants, along with Dallas, are one of only two teams in the NFC with double digits in wins and are emerging as a primary rival with the Cowboys to make it out of the NFC during the playoffs, thanks to a defense that has gelled and played extremely tough in the second half of the season. Check out our prediction for this game as well as all of the NFL betting picks for Week 16 action.

NY Giants at Philadelphia Week 16 Betting Pick & Prediction

When: Thursday, December 22, 2016, 7:30pm ET
Where: Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia
TV: NFL Network / NBC
Radio: Philadelphia / New York
Stream Option: NFL Live
NFL Odds: Giants -2.5

Why should you bet on the Giants?

The Giants have figured out how to keep opponents out of double digits on offense, even with such high-powered attacks as Dallas (7 points two games ago) and Detroit (6 points on Sunday). The spending that New York did on defense during the off-season has paid off, as the unit now punishes opposing running backs and provides suffocating pass coverage. Their passing game has become less ambitious but more productive, as Eli Manning used a barrage of short, quick passes to move the ball down the field against both Dallas and Detroit. The Giants didn’t reach 20 points in either win, but all you have to do is score more points than the opposition. Now that it looks like the entire NFL has figured out Eagles rookie quarterback Carson Wentz, that Giant defense will pin their ears back and focus on stopping tailback Ryan Mathews.

Why should you put your money on the Eagles?

Tight end Zach Ertz has emerged as a force in the Eagles’ passing game. Opposing pass rushers have limited the amount of time that Wentz has to look down the field, so Ertz has emerged in holes in opposing zone coverages. Also, while Paul Perkins has emerged as a possible threat in the running game, the Giants still don’t score a whole lot, even with the explosive Odell Beckham, Jr. on the field. If the Eagles can provide decent pass protection, Wentz should be able to find some openings in that Giant secondary, which falls apart when opposing quarterbacks actually have time to throw the ball.

Betting Pick and Final Score Prediction

Thursday night games have yielded a lot of upsets this year, as well as a lot of “under” performances on the point total. That tends to favor the defensively minded Giants, and I see them knocking off the Eagles and picking up Win #11, putting the heat on Dallas to keep winning if they want to clinch the NFC East.

I predict a final score of New York 20, Philadelphia 9.
