NFL Betting: 2021 Draft Race for No. 1 Pick
The 2020 NFL season has been a very unique one. With all of the COVID-19 issues, very few, if any fans in attendance, and many other issues, it’s a miracle that we’ve finally made it to Week 15. With 13 games in the books, many teams have figured out that they’re not going to make the playoffs this season. With that being said, teams that know that they won’t be playing beyond Week 17 are now starting to prepare for the 2021 NFL Draft. Let’s break down the Jets and the Jaguars chances of getting the first pick in the 2021 NFL Draft so you can plan your bets and place them against their NFL Draft odds.
Updated 2021 NFL Draft race for No. 1 pick
While there will still be a lot of jockeying for draft position in the upcoming weeks, we’re almost certain that we know the two teams that have a great shot at the first pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. In the minds of many NFL fans, the New York Jets and the Jacksonville Jaguars are “Tanking for Trevor”. The Trevor that we’re referring to is Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence. If Lawrence opts to enter the draft, many consider him to be the favorite to be the top pick in the draft.
New York Jets
The Jets are 0-13, and have been abysmal all season long. The Jets blew their shot at winning their first game eight days ago when Defensive Coordinator Gregg Williams called an all-out blitz on fourth down with the Raiders trailing the Jets. In Cover 0 coverage, an undrafted rookie defensive back was left in one-on-one coverage and was obliterated by Henry Ruggs for a Raider touchdown and another Jets loss. Williams was fired the next morning, and things just keep going bad for the Jets. Russell Wilson and the Seahawks destroyed the Jets 40-3 this past weekend.
The Jets have been outscored 393-183 on the season. Their once-quarterback of the future, Sam Darnold, has been beaten and battered all season, and the team seems to have lost confidence in him. Things don’t get any better for the Jets the rest of the way, as they still have to play the Rams, the Browns, and the Patriots. It doesn’t look like there’s going to be any games left that the Jets can win, and they have the best shot and winning the #1 pick, their only victory of the season.
When the Jaguars beat the Colts in Week 1, many were very surprised, as the Jaguars were predicted to not win many games this season. Well, the momentum from that victory didn’t last long, as the Jaguars haven’t won a game since that first game. Now sitting at 1-12, the Jags are just behind the Jets in the race for the #1 pick.
Jacksonville has had quarterback issues of their own this season. Gardner Minshew, Jake Luton, and Mike Glennon have all taken snaps for the Jaguars. Their offense has been able to score at times, as rookie running back James Robinson has had a very nice season. The Jags also have a respectable receiving corps. The issue is the defense. They have allowed 383 points this season, and have fallen on hard times, as just two years ago the Jacksonville defense was one of the top units in the league.
Unless the Jets shock the world and win a game, we’re penciling the Jaguars in for the second pick in the upcoming draft. Even if Trevor Lawrence isn’t available, the Jaguars could still end up with a quarterback, as Justin Fields could be a great fit under center for Jacksonville.
