New England at Miami Week 17 Betting Pick & Odds

Posted by Peter Boysen on December 28, 2016 in

The Miami Dolphins and the New England Patriots wrap up their regular season down in South Florida, as the AFC East champions visit one of the wild card holders. When the teams met up in Boston in Week 2, the Patriots struggled to put away the Dolphins, winning, 31-24. However, that was during Tom Brady’s four-game suspension, so Jimmy Garoppolo was leading the New England attack that week. If the Patriots win, they secure home field advantage all the way through the playoffs. Those Dolphins shook off a 1-4 start, though, and have won 9 of 10 to sit at 10-5, the only setback coming up in Baltimore four weeks ago. You can find all of our NFL betting insights for Week 17 and the playoffs beyond as you line up your wagers.

Why should you bet on the Patriots?

These two teams also met in Week 17 a year ago. The Patriots sat atop the AFC playoff standings and just needed a win to take that home field advantage. They lost to Miami, and Denver won, taking that top seed, and the Patriots had to travel to the Mile High City for the AFC Championship, where they lost to the eventual Super Bowl champions. The Dolphins are still trying to work backup quarterback Matt Moore into their mix. He has played masterfully so far, leading the Fish to a rout of the New York Jets and an overtime win in Buffalo that ended Rex Ryan’s head coaching gig there. Even so, the Patriots play defense with more consistency than either the Jets or the Bills, so Moore will have a lot more challenges to face. Also, if Tyrod Taylor was able to carve up the Dolphins’ defense last week, imagine what Brady will be able to do.

Why should you put your money on the Dolphins?

This not the same Miami team that went up to New England lost to a backup quarterback in September. They have won nine of ten, including a 15-point win over the Pittsburgh Steelers, an impressive road win in San Diego, and a big home win over the Arizona Cardinals. Despite the loss of Tannehill, the Dolphins have shown that they can move the ball. If Ndamukong Suh can find his pass rushing skills and give Tom Brady a run for his money, the Dolphins have a shot at controlling the tempo of this game — remember, the Patriots still do not have Rob Gronkowski on the field.

Betting Pick and Final Score Prediction

I see the Patriots winning this one, but I don’t see the Dolphins giving up this chance to win their fifth straight AFC East game without a big fight. I like Miami to cover with a final score of New England 27, Miami 23.
