Los Angeles at New England Week 13 Betting Pick & Prediction

Posted by Peter Boysen on December 1, 2016 in

The Los Angeles Rams (4-7) head east to take on the New England Patriots (9-2) on Sunday afternoon. The Rams took a 49-21 shellacking from New Orleans last week and is almost out of the playoff scenario. The Patriots currently hold the best record in the AFC and have their sights on another Super Bowl berth. Now that Tom Brady has returned from his DeflateGate suspension, it looks like it would take an act of nature to knock the Patriots off the road to the sport’s biggest game once again. Check out our NFL picks for all of this weekend’s contests.

Why should you bet on the Rams?

I don’t think there’s any way the Rams come out of New England with a win. However, that spread has my eyebrows raised for a couple of reasons. First, the Patriots are likely to enter this game without Rob Gronkowski, who either complicated his chest injury from a couple of weeks ago or added a back injury to the list last week. Either way, it’s doubtful that he plays on Sunday. Second, Tom Brady is hobbling around on a bum knee. Yes, he played a stellar fourth quarter last week, but he didn’t have a defense as stout as the Rams’ unit. Finally, there is that solid Ram defense. I know that the Saints torched them last week, but December weather isn’t as friendly to a high-octane passing game as the inside of the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

Why should you put your money on the Patriots?

The Patriots could make rookie quarterback Jared Goff have a miserable day and pressure him into all kinds of mistakes. However, he did throw three touchdown passes against New Orleans, so his confidence should be relatively high. The Rams could cough the ball up a couple of times and give the Patriots some short fields. There’s also the fact that the Rams are 1-5- 1 against the spread in their last seven games, while New England has beaten the spread eight out of the last 11 times. So if you like the calm, collected, experienced Patriots to rattle the rookie, then this spread might make sense for you.

Betting Pick and Final Score Prediction

I see this game turning into a grinding contest. That 44.5 over/under total tells you how the oddsmakers see this more as a street fight than a finesse game. I like the Patriots to win, but I think the Rams will cover that chasm of a spread, with a final score of New England 23, Los Angeles 13.
