Kansas City Chiefs vs Oakland Raiders NFL Betting Preview

Posted by Aaron . on December 4, 2015 in

The Kansas City Chiefs have had a real Jekyll-and-Hyde season, dominating the Houston Texans in week 1 before losing five straight. Since then, they have roared back with a five-game winning streak that has them 6-5. This week, they visit the Oakland Raiders (5-6) in a key AFC West matchup. Kansas City is the -3 NFL betting favorites, and their over-under total is 44 points.

Why you should bet on the Kansas City Chiefs

Kansas City is riding a hot streak, and they have also won nine of the last 12 matchups in Oakland. The Chiefs have been scoring an average of 32 points per game during their five-game winning streak, while only permitting an average of 12 points. Quarterback Alex Smith has been the consummate game manager, with an eight-game streak in which he has thrown 283 passes without a single interception. That is the fourth longest such streak in the history of the NFL and is one primary reason why the offense has played so well even after the injury of tailback Jamaal Charles.

Why you should bet on the Oakland Raiders

New head coach Jack Del Rio has brought fresh air to Oakland. As the former defensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos, he is quite familiar with the Raiders’ foes. Del Rio was instrumental in helping Denver dominate Kansas City between 2012 and 2014, as the Broncos went 6-0 straight up in those six meetings. On offense, the Raiders are back to their early season success, riding the golden arm of second-year signal caller Derek Carr. When the Raiders beat Tennessee last week, 24-21, Carr hurled the ball for 330 yards and three scores without any picks. This was his best game since Oakland knocked off the Jets back in Week 8.

Our Betting Prediction

In the last 17 meetings between Oakland and Kansas City, the visitors have gone 12-5 straight up and against the spread. When the Raiders have been home underdogs lately, they have gone 5-2 straight up and against the spread. In their last 11 games with road favorite status, the Chiefs have gone 8-3 straight up and against the spread. The Chiefs have the hotter streak right now, but Oakland has been terrific as a home underdog. Del Rio will know the right defensive tactics to upset Smith and perhaps force him to throw a pick. Take the Raiders to cover here, if not to win outright.
