Why should you bet on Iowa?

Iowa knocked off Purdue at home on Sunday, prevailing 83-71. The Hawkeyes (16-3, 7-0) only see the Terrapins once this season in a road contest. Iowa has played nine teams already from the RPI Top 50, winning six of those games. They have beaten Michigan State (20) twice, Purdue (25) twice, Michigan (32) and Wichita State (41). They have knocked off five teams from the AP Top 25 this season, more than anyone else. They have a 13-game winning streak in Big Ten regular season play going back to last year. They started 7-0 in the Big Ten this season, their best opening since 1969-70, when they went 14-0. In Big Ten play, they have won six of seven games by at least 10 points. Jarrod Uthoff has been a beast for Iowa, the only Power 5 player with at least 350 points, 115 boards and 55 blocks. He is #1 in the Big Ten in blocked shots and scoring, the first to lead the conference in both statistical categories since JaJuan Johnson held it in 2011. He is already one a couple of different mid-season All-American lists (NBC and ESPN). This is a team on a mission.

Why should you take the Terrapins?

Melo Trimble, of the Maryland Terrapins. Losing to Michigan State was a big setback for a Maryland team that saw itself as a major player in contention for the Big Ten title and a high seed in the NCAA tournament. The fact that Iowa and Maryland only meet once make this an important game as potential tiebreakers come into play. The fact that Maryland was taken down by a Michigan State team that had lost three straight Big Ten games before this past weekend means that the Terrapins could find themselves in the wrong end of a tailspin. This is a week when they need to set the ship right so that they don’t fall behind the league leaders — and out of the Top 10.

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

Iowa has met all comers this season well, both at home and on the road. I like them to head to Maryland and knock off the opposition. The play of Jarrod Uthoff has been a real foundation for the Hawkeyes, and I don’t see anyone on the Maryland defense who can shut him down enough for the Terrapins to be able to right things. I like Iowa to win, 74-69. Iowa will cement their position atop the Big Ten and enter the conversation for one of the 1-seeds as the NCAA brackets start to come further and further into focus.
