Dallas Cowboys Top 2016 NFL Spreads and Best Picks Week 1-16

It’s hard to put a finger on how the Dallas Cowboys will fare in the 2016 NFL odds, following their head-scratching offseason. On one hand, DEs Randy Gregory and Demarcus Lawrence (Dallas’ leader with 8 sacks in 2015) won’t see the field until October due to suspensions and rookie LB Jaylon Smith is out indefinitely with a knee injury. On the other hand, Dallas will have its starting QB Tony Romo back in the fold after a season-ending collarbone injury and surgery in 2015, rookie RB Ezekiel Elliott could be up for a big year, and star WR Dez Bryant is expected to be free of his bugging foot injury that limited his efficiency.

Can the Cowboys return to the elite club after their highly disappointing 2015 campaign, or will Dallas’ offseason concerns and the improving competition in the NFC East limit the team’s ceiling in the 2016 NFL betting lines? • Note: The Cowboys had the worst SU record in the NFC East (4-12) and the worst ATS mark (4-11-1) in the division in 2015, though injuries largely contributed to the uncharacteristically poor season by Dallas.

Best Dallas Point Spread NFL Picks Week 1-16

Week 3: Chicago Bears at Dallas (-6)

NFL ATS Pick: Chicago (+6)

With a depleted defense (thanks to the suspension of Gregory Lawrence), I am a bit concerned about Dallas being favored by nearly a touchdown against an up-swinging Chicago team. As you are all aware, QB Jay Cutler is talented enough to use his talented receiving corps to cause problems to Dallas. Romo is a clutch QB and I expect him to use his stellar experience to lead the Cowboys to an eventual win in this game, but with some key pieces missing in the Dallas D-line and O-line, the ATS value should be with Cutler and the Bears.

Week 6: Dallas at Green Bay Packers (-6)

NFL ATS Pick: Green Bay (-6)

Like the Cowboys, the Packers had an injury-plagued 2015 campaign. But while Dallas managed to win only 4 games, Green Bay still managed a double-digit win campaign that included a trip to the 2015-16 NFL playoffs. The takeaway from all that is Green Bay has more depth than Dallas, something that should see them stay solid again in 2016, whether or not they face more injury concerns. More relevantly, the Packers have won their last five straight overall meetings against Dallas, including a 3-0 regular season record at the Lambeau, with all the three home wins coming by 10-plus points. Expect to see this trend continue with Green Bay delivering another solid win and cover over Dallas.

Week 10: Dallas Cowboys at Pittsburgh (-8.5)

NFL ATS Pick: Dallas (+8.5)

There’s no question that the Ben Roethlisberger-led Pittsburgh offense is a scary unit, considering the QB can run the ball efficiently through Le’Veon Bell and Co., or alternatively slice opposing defenses aerially by targeting Antonio Brown and gang. Throw in the fact that the Steelers’ defense has been on the upswing and looks to get better in 2016 from painstaking years of investments on the D, the Cowboys are guaranteed a hellish time in this fixture. Still, I think Pittsburgh is getting overly favored in this game. Romo, Bryant and 2016 offensive rookie of the year candidate Ezekiel Elliot are well-capable of matching up to the trio of Big Ben, Bell and Brown. Defensively, the Cowboys have actually been a better side than Pittsburgh over the last couple of years, so the defensive edge should be with Dallas, even if Pittsburgh will probably not be far behind. With that, I expect Dallas to at least cover the huge 8.5-point spread in this game.

Week 13: Dallas at Minnesota Vikings (-4.5)

NFL ATS Pick: Dallas (+4.5)

Save for the last couple of seasons, Minnesota has been a pretty average team while Dallas has been a perennial football powerhouse. But even with Dallas being the better and more proven team, the Vikings have interestingly owned Dallas when playing at home, winning the last five straight home games against the Cowboys. And after Teddy Bridgewater and Adrian Peterson powered the Vikings to a big season in 2015, along with a strong support from their solid defense, I wouldn’t be surprised if the surging Minnesota franchise continues to soar with more success here. That said, this game against Minnesota will be one of the winnable games for the Cowboys down the stretch and I doubt if Romo and his experienced Dallas teammates will allow themselves to get beaten here, let alone lose by as many as 4.5-plus points to a heavily-conservative Vikings team.
