Look For Chiefs To Take NFL Betting Win Over Chargers

The Kansas City Chiefs altered the line for this week’s matchup with the San Diego Chargers when they went into Denver and whipped the Broncos 29-10, picking off Peyton Manning four times and ushering in the era of Bronco backup quarterback Brock Osweiler. The Chiefs had been slight favorites already heading out to San Diego but now find themselves 3.5-point favorites. Last year, the Chiefs beat the Chargers in both of their meetings, including a 23-20 triumph on the West Coast.

Opening Line: Kansas City -3

The Chargers are coming off their bye week after a tough loss to the Bears, so they will have some of their injuries healed, but the Chiefs’ defense will give Phillip Rivers and the Chargers’ offense fits. San Diego has brought up some practice squad players to their active roster, including Adrian Phillips, Greg Ducre, Javontee Herndon and Tyreek Burwell.

This was going to be the Sunday night game, but the flex schedule has moved the Cincinnati-Arizona game into that time slot. The Chargers have lost five straight; the Chiefs also have a five-game losing streak this year but have won three in a row.

A key matchup in this game is Joe Barksdale and Justin Houston. The last time the two teams met, Houston sacked Phillip Rivers four times in the 2014 finale, giving him the Chiefs’ single-season sack record with 22. Barksdale is the most reliable pass protector in the Chargers’ line, even though he allowed two key sacks near the end of their loss to the Bears.

Another key matchup features the Chiefs’ Charcandrick West and the Chargers’ run defense. Chiefs tailback Jamaal Charles is done for the season. In the last three games, West has had at least 20 carries and has scored a touchdown. The Chargers permit about five yards per rushing attempt, so expect to see West a lot this week.

Melvin Gordon has disappointed some during his rookie campaign. When he was at the University of Wisconsin, he became famous for making huge runs. However, he’s had some bad luck this year as some of his big bursts have been called back for penalties. In San Diego, he still has not had any of those huge runs like he had as a Badger. The Chiefs limit opponents to 97.1 yards per game. However, it’s likely that Gordon will come out with something to prove this week.

Chiefs vs Chargers Betting Prediction

So I’m going to take the Chiefs here. Rivers is the superior quarterback to Alex Smith, but the Chiefs’ defense is much better than what the Chargers roll out there. I don’t think the game will be decided by more than a touchdown, but I like the Chiefs to win and cover that small spread.
