Buccaneers vs Eagles NFL Preseason Week 1 Expert Prediction

Posted by Peter Boysen on August 10, 2016 in

Both Dirk Koetter (Tampa) and Doug Pederson (Philadelphia) will be making their NFL head coaching debuts in this contest. Koetter was the offensive coordinator last season and moved up when the team parted ways with Lovie Smith. The Eagles brought in Pederson, who had been the offensive coordinator in Kansas City, after separating with Chip Kelly after Week 16. Eagles fans are likely to get their first look at quarterback Carson Wentz in this preseason opener, as the team selected him #2 overall in the draft. Let’s look at how the NFL odds will pay off in this matchup.

Why should you bet on the Eagles?

The Eagles have a lot of talent at the quarterback position, but they also have a lot of question marks associated with that talent. Their three quarterbacks right now are Sam Bradford (formerly the NFC’s Offensive Rookie of the Year as a St. Louis Ram), Chase Daniel (a phenomenal talent for the University of Missouri) and Wentz, who guided North Dakota State to an FCS championship. I expect the focus to be on Wentz with the offense, although I think the Eagles’ approach will be to rehab Bradford a bit so that he can be the team’s offensive leader while Wentz develops. Either way, the Eagles will be able to throw the ball down the field.

Why should you put your money on Tampa Bay?

The Buccaneers got a lot out of rookie quarterback Jameis Winston last year, but I like them to get even more out of him in 2016. He will only play the first quarter, according to reports, so we’ll see a lot out of Mike Glennon and Ryan Griffin at quarterback. If you pick Tampa Bay, though, you’re banking on that revitalized defense, with such rookies as Vernon Hargreaves and Noah Spence, as well as free agent signee Brent Grimes. If Tampa Bay can muster a pass rush on the Eagles, Tampa Bay could waltz out with a win.

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

Based on what we saw last year out of the two teams’ defenses, I like the Buccaneers to go up to Philly and get the win here. I’m predicting a 20-13 Tampa Bay win.
