NFL Betting: Cam Newton Savior of the Patriots?

On June 28th, the NFL world was stunned by a move made by the New England Patriots. After losing future hall-of-famer Tom Brady, and naming Jarrett Stidham the new starter, Bill Belichick went and did the unthinkable. In a move that very few saw coming, the New England Patriots signed former league MVP, Cam Newton, to a contract. Let’s take a closer look at this incredible player so you can make your bets against their NFL odds.

NFL Betting – Is Cam Newton the QB That the Patriots need to win the Super Bowl?

With the Carolina Panthers hiring Matt Rhule as their new head coach, Rhule wanted to bring in a new quarterback. After signing free agent Teddy Bridgewater, the Panthers released Newton. After Newton had gone weeks without being signed, many figured that he would be without a team until a starting quarterback went down due to injury. Belichick beat everyone to the punch and grabbed Newton.

While you’ll never get a straight answer from Belichick, many are questioning if Newton will even be the starter. Since he’s on a team-friendly contract, the Patriots won’t feel obligated to start him due to salary reasons. So with that being said, if Newton is given the chance, can he take the Patriots to the playoffs?

Let’s go back to 2010. A first-year head coach named Josh McDaniels drafted Tim Tebow to lead his Denver Broncos. Tebow took over as the starter midway through the season and led the Broncos to a playoff victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers. McDaniels had tailored his offense to Tebow’s strengths. Will Bill Belichick allow McDaniels to do that again? If he does, we could see a lot of rollouts and RPOs for Newton.

It’s common knowledge that Bill Belichick doesn’t like his players personalities to overshadow the team. Newton has never been shy to voice his opinions on a wide variety of topics. Can Newton keep his thoughts to himself and obey the laws of the Patriots? Will he buy into the “Patriot Way”?

If Newton wins the starting spot, will he be happy being a “game manager”? In the past, Newton has been known to take chances, and he has been burnt on many occasions. With the Patriots having one of the top defenses in the league, and the Patriots normally being a very conservative offensive team, Newton can’t afford to be making mistakes. If Newton can accept that role, the Patriots can be successful.

Newton will be coming into this season with a chip on his shoulder. Nobody wanted him. The Panthers released him. He was a former league MVP that nobody would take a chance on. Newton feels disrespected, and that could drive him to work even harder than he has in the past. Bill Belichick and Josh McDaniels can throw gas onto Cam’s fire and turn him back into one of the league’s top quarterbacks.

The AFC East isn’t one of the stronger divisions in the league. With the Jets and Dolphins lacking in the talent department, this looks like a two-team race between the Bills and the Patriots. If Newton is the chosen leader of the Patriots, he has a great shot at taking them to 16th AFC East title since 2002.

We still don’t know if Newton will be able to beat out Stidham, but if he does, look for an inspired, driven signal-caller that will do anything to win. He is out to prove all of the naysayers wrong, and if he can play up to his capabilities, he has the chance to make the Patriots a solid team that can make the playoffs.
