Barcelona vs Lyon UEFA Champions League Odds & Pick

There is all to play for during Wednesday’s Champions League match Barcelona vs Lyon. Despite a scoreless draw in France during the first leg, Barcelona is a heavy -532 favorite to win at home in the second leg. Lyon is just +1022 to win with a draw set at +559.

Lyon shocked many by managing a scoreless draw against the Spanish giants in the first leg, but they’ve been a little up and down since that game. They are a distant third in their domestic league and have only won two of their last four games since the draw with Barcelona. They also dropped points over the weekend in a draw against Strasbourg.

On the other hand, Soccer Betting favorite Barcelona has been red hot since their disappointing draw in France last month. The Catalan side has won four straight games, including two wins over domestic rival Real Madrid. Barcelona has also outscored their opponents 11-3 during those four games, so they’ve been in good form over the past few weeks.

A Little Help

With Lionel Messi, Barcelona always knows that they have the best player on the field. However, he’s always going to be a marked man, so the Spanish side needs to give him some support. That is potentially problematic with Ousmane Dembele expected to miss the game due to injury. The club also isn’t sure what they can expect from Philippe Coutinho, who hasn’t scored since January and appears disgruntled with how things are going for him in Spain.

Barcelona’s best chance to get a goal from someone other than Messi will be Luis Suarez. Despite failing to find the back of the net during the Champions League campaign this season, Suarez has scored four goals in his last four games, finally rounding into form. If Lyon is too focused on Messi, it’s up to Suarez to make them pay. Also, the sooner Barcelona can get a goal in this game, the better off they’ll be.

Make It Count

Lyon held just 37% possession during the first leg against Barcelona, and that was at home. That number isn’t likely to improve by much in the second leg, which will force the French side into a defensive shell. Much of this game will fall on the shoulders of midfielders Tanguy Ndombele, Lucas Tousart, and Houssem Aouar. It’ll be their job to prevent Messi from running wild in the midfield while also keeping Suarez from getting service anywhere near the penalty box.

If the Lyon midfield can handle that, they’ll have a chance to unleash the likes of Memphis Depay and Bertrand Traore on the counterattack. Those players have the speed and skill to hurt Barcelona if they are caught pushing too high. Of course, that may be Lyon’s only chance of getting a goal to help push them through to the quarterfinals.

There Will Be Goals in Barcelona vs Lyon

After the teams went scoreless in the first leg, someone is bound to score in this game. Lyon has a slight edge in that a 1-1 would be enough for them to advance. But with Suarez back in form, the Spanish giants are poised to score multiple goals at home, and Lyon won’t be able to match that playing on the counter. Bet on Barcelona to beat Lyon on Wednesday.
