Virginia Tech vs Notre Dame Week 12 Expert Betting Pick

Posted by Aaron . on July 28, 2016 in

Notre Dame will take on the Virginia Tech Hokies for the very first time in Week 12 this season. Virginia Tech went 7-6 last season, including a 55-52 shootout win over Tulsa in the Independence Bowl. Three of those losses were by four points or fewer, though, and two of them were in overtime. Notre Dame went 10-3, but their two regular season losses were at Clemson (by two points) and at Stanford (by two points). Their loss to Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl was a bit bigger, 44-28. Why should you bet on Virginia Tech?

Justin Fuente comes on as the new football coach, and his first challenge is to fix an offense that has been stagnant for about five years. Fuente comes from Memphis, where he was the offensive coordinator and brought the team from #120 in S&P+ in the 2011 season to #49 by 2014 and #55 in 2015, a significant improvement. Before that, he was the offensive coordinator for the strong TCU program. He will have a seasoned receiving corps and linebackers, but young players in the defensive backfield and at tailback — and he has to select a quarterback. So things could go well for Tech if Fuente can get the offense up and running.

Why should you put your money on the Fighting Irish?

Given that starting quarterback Malik Zaire went down in Week 2, the Irish had a terrific season and were in the conversation for the College Football Playoff all the way until that loss to Stanford in the regular season’s last game. The offensive line has three solid starters returning, and Josh Adams and Tarean Folston give them a terrific pair of tailbacks. The defense faltered at key times, particularly in those late losses to Stanford and Ohio State. The run defense will need some help, as linebacker Jaylon Smith has moved on to the NFL, but Nyles Morgan stands ready to take his place. There could be some weakness at safety, which makes a good pass rush even more important.

My Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

I think the Hokies will make some noise in the ACC Coastal, but they’re not ready for a top-10 or -15 program like Notre Dame. I’m predicting a 38-24 Irish win.
