Why should you bet on the Volunteers?

The Georgia Bulldogs roared out to a 17-0 lead over Tennessee Volunteers last week, but the Vols came all the way back to take a late 27-24 lead. Even though Georgia threw a Hail Mary to score with 12 seconds left, Tennessee quarterback Josh Dobbs threw a bomb of his own with the clock ticking down to zero. Dobbs played solid ball all night long, throwing for 230 yards with three touchdowns, rushing for another touchdown, against just one pick. For the season Dobbs has a 13:6 touchdown-to-interception ratio. Juan Jennings caught the game-winner and picked up 71 yards on three total catches. Tennessee scores 33 points per game, good for #57 in the nation.

The Volunteer defense did not start well, but they limited the Bulldogs to 211 passing yards, picking off an interception and forcing a pair of fumbles. Tennessee ranks #46 in the nation on scoring defense, permitting just 23 points per game.

Why should you bet on the Aggies?

Transfer quarterback Trevor Knight has brought the Aggie offense the stability that it needs, and he threw for 206 yards against South Carolina last week — while running for 84 yards and a score. He has only thrown three interceptions this year, against seven touchdowns, and he did not turn the ball over at all against the Gamecocks. Tailback Trayveon Williams also had a solid game, carrying the ball just 14 times for 98 yards. He has run for 487 yards in the first five weeks of the season and is a major factor in the Aggies putting up 39.2 points per game.

Texas A&M features a stout defense that permitted just a single touchdown against South Carolina. However, they have not had to face any strong offenses so far this year, so Tennessee could present a real challenge. The Aggies rank #12 in the nation in scoring defense (15.4 points per game), but that number could rise against Tennessee.

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

As solid as Texas A&M has played this year, they did not cover the spread against South Carolina. They have only won 8 of their last 26 conference games. Meanwhile, the Volunteers come in 6-1 ATS in their last seven contests against a team playing above .500. I like Texas A&M to pull off a close win at home, but I don’t think they win by a touchdown. I predict a final score of Texas A&M 30, Tennessee 27.
