The Boise State Broncos meet Northern Illinois in the Poinsettia Bowl, slated for December 23 in San Diego. The Broncos are eight-point favorites, as they enter 5-1 straight up (4-2 ATS) in their last six bowl appearances. Why should you choose Boise State (-8)?

The Broncos opened the season 7-2, defeating Washington, but losses to New Mexico and Air Force knocked them out of contention in the Mountain West Conference. However, they knocked off San Jose State 40-23 in the last game of the season, finishing with an 8-4 record (5-3 MWC). They have outgained 8 of their last 10 opponents, outrushing 7 of them. They have a consistent ground game and have imposed their will on a number of impressive opponents.

The Broncos will fight for the bowl!

Why should you choose the Huskies (+8)?

Northern Illinois got off to a 2-3 start, but two of those setbacks were at Boston College (who finished with the nation’s #1 defense) and at Ohio State — by a combined 10 points. Then they ran off six straight wins before being upset at home by Ohio U., 26-21. They lost to Bowling Green in the MAC Championship game, finishing with a 9-4 record. However, it’s fair to point out that Northern Illinois had to go with their third string quarterback with Tommy Fiedler. They have been solid on both sides of the ball, and an eight-point spread is a big one for a bowl game like this. The Huskies have the toughness to keep this game closer.

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

Boise State is #24 in the nation for total defense and #18 for total offense, and they’re likely to face either the #2 or #3 quarterback from Northern Illinois. I’m predicting Boise to win and cover, 31-14.
